Therapy for Adults

A supportive space to pause, make sense, and reconnect with yourself.

Adult life can be deeply meaningful—and also overwhelming. Many adults seek therapy when stress, emotional intensity, burnout, or long-standing patterns begin to interfere with their well-being, relationships, or sense of self. We provide counseling and therapy for individuals seeking a thoughtful, affirming place to explore their experiences and strengthen their well-being.

Our approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and grounded in respect for each person’s lived experience. We work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and identities, including those navigating anxiety or depression, identity development, relationship stress, life transitions, or patterns that feel difficult to shift. We also have extensive experience supporting neurodivergent adults—whether newly exploring this aspect of themselves or seeking a space that honors their way of being—while ensuring therapy remains accessible and welcoming to anyone seeking meaningful change.

Who Therapy Can Support

Many adults seek therapy when they’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from the parts of life that once felt manageable. Therapy can be especially helpful when emotional patterns, relationship dynamics, or long-standing ways of coping begin to feel unsustainable or misaligned with what you want for yourself.

Adult therapy can support a wide range of experiences and concerns, from anxiety, depression, and burnout to shifts in identity, motivation, or direction. For some, this may involve navigating changes in relationships, communication, or boundaries; for others, it may include the evolving roles and responsibilities that come with a new job or caring for others. Therapy also offers an affirming space to explore aspects of identity, including LGBTQ+ experiences, or to reflect on how your background, culture, or values shape the way you move through the world. For neurodivergent adults, therapy may provide space to reflect on long-standing coping strategies and understand how these patterns shape your daily life.

Wherever you’re coming from and whatever you're bringing to therapy, our aim is to help you make room for shifts that nurture well-being, authenticity, and meaningful connection.

Adults often come to therapy for support with concerns such as:

  • Stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm

  • Depression or changes in mood

  • Relationship stress or communication difficulties

  • Burnout related to work or caregiving

  • Identity exploration & development or life transitions

  • Support related to LGBTQ+ experiences

  • Patterns of self-criticism, people-pleasing, or overfunctioning

  • Feeling disconnected, stuck, or unsure of next steps

  • Exploring or understanding neurodivergence

  • Coping strategies that once worked but now feel overwhelming or unsustainable

Our Approach to Therapy

Counseling and therapy at MCT is grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and respect. We do not view therapy as a process of “fixing," but rather as an opportunity to bring clarity and understanding to your unique experiences, emotional patterns, and strengths in a space that honors your autonomy and pace.

Our clinicians integrate evidence-based therapeutic methods while remaining flexible and responsive to each individual’s needs. We place strong emphasis on insight, self-compassion, and developing sustainable strategies that support well-being. For adults who have spent years accommodating others’ expectations or pushing through without adequate support, therapy can become a place to unlearn patterns that no longer serve you and to explore new ways of relating to yourself and others that feel more grounded and aligned with your values.

What Therapy Looks Like

Beginning therapy starts with an intake appointment, a dedicated time for us to understand your concerns and what you’re hoping for in the therapeutic process. Some clients choose to begin with a brief consultation to get a sense of a clinician’s style and therapeutic fit, while others prefer to move directly into the intake; either option is welcome. When you’re ready to get started, our team will collect onboarding paperwork and verify any applicable insurance benefits. We aim to make these early steps clear and supported so you can focus on the work itself rather than the logistics.

Therapy unfolds collaboratively, shaped by your goals and supported by evidence-based approaches tailored to your needs. While each clinician brings their own strengths and therapeutic style, all of our work is grounded in collaboration, respect, and evidence-informed care. Depending on what feels most helpful, sessions may focus on building practical coping strategies, strengthening emotional awareness, or exploring long-standing patterns that influence how you move through the world. We take care to move at a pace that feels steady, integrating insight, skill-building, and reflection in ways that honor your lived experience. Throughout the process, your clinician will help you notice meaningful shifts and moments of progress, supporting a clearer sense of what is changing—and what feels possible—over time.

Follow-up sessions are scheduled directly with your clinician at a frequency that feels supportive and sustainable for you. In-person sessions are offered at our Durham, NC office, or via telehealth. Our administrative team remains available throughout your care to help with scheduling, insurance questions, and anything else that may support a smooth and grounded experience.
